So it matters now that George Zimmerman was a Democrat.
This is thanks to Free Beacon, a new conservative site based around the drunken idea that naming something that looks like Free Bacon will trick people into reading it. Free Beacon, which hopes to be a conservative ballast to the Huffington Post, put in size 198 font today that George Zimmerman is a registered democrat.
What this has to do with anything is their guess, but it follows other reports from conversative publications highlighting the fact that Zimmerman is part Hispanic. The argument, unspoken or not, is that Zimmerman can't possibly be a racist vigilante if he himself is not white or not conservative.
This logic rests on a misreading of the racial component of the shooting. No one's arguing that George Zimmerman is a racist, they're arguing that his action was racially motivated. He could be a saint in the rest of his life, but he singled out Trayvon Martin as a possible criminal based on nothing more than his race and his clothes. Being a registered Democrat doesn't change, or even complicate very much, the fact that if Trayvon Martin had been white, he'd most likely still be alive.
Whether Zimmerman is a racist or not is irrelevant; why he tracked down Trayvon Martin--and even if the self-defense claim turns out to be true, Zimmerman still mistakenly singled him out as a threat for no reason--is important. What party Zimmerman aligns with explains nothing.
