American Crossroads, a conservative group headed by former President George W. Bush advisor Karl Rove, has released a cleaver and effective ad parodying today’s first day of oral arguments in the Supreme Court on the constitutionality of the individual mandate in Obama’s health care reform law. The ad shows that the biggest proponent of the individual mandate was, of course, President Obama. He faces the shear cynicism of the mandate’s most vocal opponent… President Obama?
While this is an effective ad, it is meant to be consumed only by the die-hards who view and absorb political 90 second web ads. Most of the audience of this ad will already be familiar with the nature of the debate between then-Sen. Obama and Hillary Clinton in 2008 over the nature of health care reform. Low information voters probably have neither the time nor patience to wonder about such trivialities.
The American Crossroads ad is very good – it’s a model that will surely be adopted by Democratic groups in the fall as they go to the shortest of lengths to portray Mitt Romney as the flip-flopper that he is.
