Well, this is some crummy news—68-year-old soul legend Bobby Womack has reportedly been both diagnosed with colon cancer and hospitalized with pneumonia. According to The Guardian, the news first broke on Facebook, where friend and fellow music legend Bootsy Collins, of all people, wrote the following:
"We Pray for Bobby Womack Right Now, TO BE HEALED FROM PNEUMONIA AND ANY OTHER AILMENT HE IS FIGHTING AT THIS TIME. THIS SONG GOES OUT TO MY FRIEND BOBBY WE DID ON MY LATEST ALBUM... I JUST SPOKE TO [Bobby]. He Wanted You All to Know That He Loves You & Thxs for the Prayers. Docs Says He Is In 1st Stage of Colon Cancer, He is Very Up Beat About His Future, we laughed & joked before we hung up. Thxs Funkateers, we will get him Back on the One!" [sic throughout]
Sadly, Mr. Womack is no stranger to health trouble—The Guardian also reports that he underwent a "minor heart procedure" earlier this month and underwent prostate cancer surgery last year.
Keeping all that in mind, you should be extra interested to know that Womack's appropriately-titled new album The Bravest Man In The Universe (co-produced by Gorillaz collaborator Damon Albarn) hits stores and services on June 12. If you haven't already, check out the album's gut-wrenching first single "Please Forgive My Heart" right here.
Sending positive thoughts and prayers your way, Bobby—get well soon, sir!
