If people remembered one thing about last winter's American remake of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, it was how hilarious it was. So, getting into the spirit of things, Sony decided to have a little fun with the DVD version. The disc looks like a one of those DVDs that you can buy by the 100s at Best Buy with the film's title written in Sharpie. Of course, it also has the Paramount logo and the film's rating on it, but its still kind of clever, and goes along with David Fincher's history of creative DVD packaging. But that hasn't stopped the confusion from people who think that they've mistakenly bought a pirated version of the movie or something.
In order to avoid confusion, Redbox has actually had to post a warning to their renters that says, “NOTE TO RENTERS: The handwritten look on the disc of this movie is legitimate and is intended to look like a burned DVD.” Because you know a joke works when you have to explain it to people. My question to you, fellow FilmOlogists, is where does this rank alongside other hilarious movie warnings? I'd say its funnier than the Cloverfield motion sickness warnings, but still lags behind these all-time classic No Refund messages about The Tree of Life.
