It's a shame that Lady Gaga is on a media blackout—that's still happening, right? Fellow gay icon Rufus Wainwright had some choice words for the Mother Monster in a recent interview with Music Week, citing her as a major influence on his new album Out Of The Game (out April 16) while dissing her faux-empowerment schtick. Yeah, ouch... and also, um, really? How does that work?
"I totally admire her tenacity, her ambition and her strength of vision," says Wainwright. "There's just not one good song there. People, especially gay men, are falling so hard for it... Certain things that she says: 'Look at me. I was like you one day and now I'm this - and you can do it too.' I find it a bit disingenuous. We are in this somewhat sinister period and artists have got to kind of toughen up and be real. It's about conveying what's inside us, as opposed to the return of the cone breasts. I find it predictable and boring." (via Gigwise)
Oh snap, I think Rufus just compared Lady Gaga to Madonna! I doubt she's ever heard that one before...
Seriously, though, I know this is the part where I'm meant to weigh in with my own opinion and then ask you guys to argue about it amongst yourselves in the comments section below... but I think I'm going to opt out this time. I love Rufus Wainwright... even when he's being a little extra bitchy... and I (sometimes) love Gaga and definitely respect her ability to incite forceful opinions and the fierce two-way bond she has with her fanbase.
Is there "one good song in there"? Yes, but I'm not going to tell you which one it is. (It may or may not be called "So Happy I Could Die".)
Should you let us know where you stand in the Rufus/Gaga non-debate in the comments section below. Shrug, if you want to. It's a great day outside today—you could go for a walk instead. Or adopt a kitten. Or start a lemonade stand. Whatever your little heart desires. Personally, I'm going to finish this blueberry muffin and text my girlfriend. We'll talk later, okay? Ciao, bellas.
