I don't know about you guys, but my last week consisted largely of hospital visits, stale coffee, and repeated listens to Fiona Apple's back catalogue. As I'm sure you know by now, the not-so-prolific piano songstress debuted three new songs off her new album The Idler Wheel is wiser than the Driver of the Screw, and Whipping Cords will serve you more than Ropes will ever do (out some time this summer) at SXSW last week—"Anything We Want", "Every Single Night" (watch those two right here) and "Valentine". Video for the latter has finally surfaced online—check it out right here (via Consequence Of Sound):
Starts off with somber, solo piano doom and gloom (a la "Love Ridden") before segueing into a quirky, very-Fiona Apple/Jon Brion arrangement. The upright bass "solo" is a nice touch... again, I can't help but wonder whether the studio version will maintain the subdued, minimal sound of the SXSW performances. As much as I love her lavish, gloriously produced studio work, it's a major thrill to hear her songs in such a raw, stripped down setting. I suppose only time will tell, right? Lyrically, it's a little hard to make out most of the words, but if I were a betting man, I'd wager she's either: 1.) heartbroken, 2.) angry as hell, or 3.) a poetic combination of both. (I'm sticking with choice #3, what do you guys think?)
Also, can we find the jerk-off who won't shut up during the song's intro and completely ban them from live shows for the rest of their natural obnoxious life? That would be splendid.
What do you guys think of "Valentine" and the other new Fiona Apple tunes? Give us your take in the comments section below.
