CT and Diem made a huge move on Wednesday night when they threw Paula and Dunbar into "The Dome" against Emily and Ty -- a move host TJ Lavin called "one of the dumbest moves in Challenge history." Harsh! (Even though CT and Diem went on to win power couple again.) Anyway, Emily and Ty came out victorius and sadly gave Paula and Dunbar the boot.
We caught up with Dunbar to talk his partner's relationship with the enemy as well as all the drama in the house.
Ology: Dunbar, how are you?
Dunbar: Doing all right.
First of all I want to ask -- where were you this season? I feel like we didn't see much of you at all.
Yeah, this season I didn’t have a lot of my normal guys to hang out with. But really, the whole premise of the show is to put a bunch of guys together with girls that they absolutely hated. You know? There’s a weird energy when you’re in the common area of the house. The only place where I felt safe was our room or whatever. They had a lot of crazy girls that just like to... I don’t know, be crazy. And it was just weird energy. I didn’t really care for the cast. I mean, it was an amazing house and everything else, but just the energy... I didn’t have my usual guys to hang out with. Wes was like the only guy I was pseudo-friends with. He went home early on so…Evan wasn’t there, Brad wasn’t there, Derek wasn’t there and those are usually the guys I walk around with and hang around with. None of the girls I like were there.
Right. And we saw a lot of Paula because of her relationship with Ty. At any point did you think that her relationship hurt your game?
No, I thought it helped. I don't think it helped Paula… in life. She had stressed to me that she really cared about this new guy she was seeing and that he was... Paula dates a lot of douche-baggy guys. She had started to see this guy who really had his stuff together, took her places and really took care of her and she pretty much moved in with him. And to blow it all for a guy like Ty? It’s like, "Are you serious?" It was great dating him because Emily wanted to kill Paula after we threw her in "The Dome." So I thought that was a good way to maybe postpone them trying to destroy us.
Ty made some vague comment on the aftershow about he doesn't like you. Thoughts?
Oh, what really made me mad is that the day before yesterday, we just shot the reunion up in New York. He was nothing but -- he was kind of a dick to Paula but -- he was very, very nice and to me and Emily. He’s the kind of guy when he gets in front of a camera, especially one that’s ten steps away, he can say whatever he wants. My first challenge, I guess it was his first challenge too, I mean he wasn’t that great. He was freakin’ horrible and I was one of the best competitors there. I’m also one of the nicest guys there, so I don’t know where he gets off saying that when I’ve done nothing but stick up for him. Especially in the mix of all this. Hey, he’s awful, hey he’s gay, he’s not gay. I think the other reason why he goes hardcore after Paula is because he’s trying to prove to the world he’s not gay.
What did you think about him saying he loves her and all that?
He’s a weird dude. I respect him as an athlete because he has come a long way and I knew he was a good athlete in college and whatever. But he’s just a different guy from the way he says things and does things. The way two girls would communicate in middle school is the way Paula and Ty interact now. You know what I mean? Like seriously, its like two 12-year-old girls conversing rather than a 21-one year old dude and a 31-one year old girl. It just makes no sense.
Do you think Paula was trying to make you jealous?
No. Hell no, I’m not jealous. Are you serious?
You never know! (laughs)
That’s never in the equation. If anything maybe Emily was initially jealous of Paula cause Ty was kissing another girl. [Ty and Emily] kind of only hung out with each other. They were kind of outcast. They didn’t really have a clique that they belonged to especially in the house. I think Emily felt like she lost her guy she usually hangs out with and vise versa. Ty felt the same way.
Did she break up with her boyfriend? They aren't still together, right?
Yeah, he dumped her. Yeah, yeah. Wouldn’t you?
I mean, of course. Just wanted to confirm! Hah.
Yeah, she made out a lot (laughs). It had to be hard to watch.
Oh my god, yeah! But she and Ty aren’t together now?
Uh…no they’re not. I think she wants to be friends with Ty. But Ty really showed his ass recently. I think he made it clear that the only reason he was hooking up with Paula was for like show or whatever. Like he didn’t give a shit that she wanted a relationship.
At one point you said Paula hated you. Are you guys cool now? Are you friends?
Yeah, ironically, before the show started we hadn’t spoken in over 18 months and she had vowed not to ever speak to me again. She hated me and I didn’t really care because I don’t hang out with Paula that much in real life. The show in a way, by the end of it, by the time we flew back together, we were back to being good friends again. It was great seeing her last week in New York. It was like we rolled back the clock a few years on our relationship. She’s like my older sister.
Right. So who do you think was the biggest train wreck this season?
That’s a dead tie between Camilla and Robin. The girls on this season were particularly delicate with the things you could say or do around them without them flipping out on you. More so than ever before. I think they finally realized that’s half the show, if not more.
Was there anyone this season that you could trust 100% or no?
Obviously not, because me and CT had a good agreement going the entire time and literally 20 minutes before he threw me in -- even though it looked like it was all Diem-- he said, “Don’t worry bro, you have nothing to worry about. We’re throwing Johnny in, love ya.” And like 20 minutes later... I mean, I had people saying, that worked in production tell me like, "Nah all of it was him begging not to make that deicision and her saying 'No, we got to get rid of them.'" I believe it, it just sucks that the only buddy you have a deal with lies to your face. I would rather have the whole, "By the way, you're going in" thing.
Name one person you could trust 100% on any challenge.
Brad has made several agreements with me in the past and honored every single one of them. He’s one of those guys I trust and there’s not that many of them. It sucks that he wasn’t there this time around.
Now name one person you would never trust in a challenge, regardless of what they said to you.
I've been burnt by... you name it: Kenny, Johnny, Evan. Those guys use to all be my friends at one point and the reason I’m not close with Kenny and Evan anymore to the point I was is because they straight up lied to my face. That’s a byproduct of when you make a deal with everybody in the house and it just comes down to who’s calling favorites at what time. You start screwing over everybody. They’re incredibly untrustworthy. They’re not even untrustworthy. It’s just that everything they say is a bold-faced lie.
Who are you rooting for now?
Honestly, out of everyone left, I would want Robin and Mark to do well. Mark wants to retire and Robin’s got a baby and not a lot going on in the home front, so it would help her a lot. That’s the ideal situation.
Will you do another challenge?
Yeah, absolutely, absolutely, always. At this point, I don’t know how to live my life without... (laughs)
You'd prefer an individual challenge I'm assuming?
I’m hoping it’s individual or at very least another team thing so I can bring a little more dynamics to the table than, “Hey this is your enemy, hey this is your ex.” I wish they would back up off the partner challenges for a second.
Definitely. Well, thanks Dunbar!
Thank you.
