I'm going to put down my New York Times crossword puzzle and chamomile tea long enough to tell you all that Andrew Bird (my favorite whistling, violin playing, quirky wordsmith and indie folk hero) stopped by last night's episode of The Colbert Report, ostensibly to talk about his new album Break It Yourself (out now), although, in true Colbert fashion, the conversation went after more relevant topics like Renaissance fairs and cancerous masses of teeth and hair. ("That's pretty obvious pop song territory.") Bird followed up the sadly brief interview with a performance of single "Eyeoneye" and a web exclusive rendition of "Danse Caribe". Check out all three below.
Interview
"Eyeoneye"
"Danse Caribe"
True story—I once briefly dated a college girl who listened to Andrew Bird's albums with an obsession that wandered deep into ineffability. After we broke up, I listened to his songs ad infinitum, trying to learn something about this girl… something I clearly missed the first time around. No, I wasn't Gay Abe Lincoln and she wasn't Raggedy Ann, but it makes me feel a little less pathetic to know that Andrew Bird's music does this to everybody else, too.
If you haven't already, hunt down a copy of Break It Yourself and listen to it at least once in a dark room with a heavy pair of proper headphones. I promise, you won't regret or forget it. While you're busy doing that, I'll be off listening to "Not A Robot, But A Ghost" for the millionth time, sighing wistfully while trying to think of a seven-letter word for "Scottish croissant".
Anyone catch Andrew Bird on Colbert last night or, y'know, just now? What'd you guys think? Hit up our comments section below.
