I spent some time in Syria before 9/11, and I really came to love the country and its very generous people. Recently, we got word from some of the friends we made there, one of them Christian. Although most of the world believes that bringing Assad down is a must, she is afraid of what would happen should that occur. Assad, although a brutal dictator, allows for the co-existence of all faiths: Christian, Muslims, and other sects. If the Muslim Sunnis, which make up 74% of the country, win against Assad, they would be less accepting of other sects. She is afraid that it would turn in to mass genocide. So, although she and others like her do not like Assad, they really fear the alternative. Interesting perspective from a well informed insider.
