Watch Prince, Miguel, Others Perform At The Billboard Music Awards
This year's b-level awards show season continued last night with the 2013 Billboard Music Awards. As introduced by Janelle Monáe and Erykah Badu, Prince celebrated his Billboard Icon award by tearing through a "Let's Go Crazy" fronted medley with current band 3rd Eye Girl… Miguel landed a pretty hardcore kick on a woman's head during "Adorn" (seriously)… while Icona Pop, Nicki Minaj, Lil Wayne and others were there because, well, why not?

Interest in legendary, criminally overlooked soul singer Bobby Womack skyrocketed after non-simian Gorillaz leader Damon Albarn recruited him to sing guest vocals on Plastic Beach and The Fall. The sometimes-Blur frontman is returning the favor by producing (along with XL Records head Richard Russell) Womack's first new album in more than a decade—The Bravest Man In The Universe. Out June 12, the album has an early first single floating around online. Do yourself a funky favor and download "Please Forgive My Heart" over at Stereogum after streaming it below.
Thoughts?
Love that sparse, haunting piano melody... and the gritty analogue electronics bubbling beneath the surface of Womack's voice—painful, passionate, ballsy and fierce as ever. There's a definite Gorillaz vibe to the production, no doubt about it... but I've always thought people don't give Albarn enough credit for his producer's ear. The arrangement never distracts from the vocals, which is more than you can say about most modern pop and R&B fare.
The Bravest Man In The Universe tracklisting:
"The Bravest Man In The Universe" "Please Forgive My Heart" "Deep River" "Dayglo Reflection" "Sweet Baby Mine" "Stupid" "If There Wasn't Something There" "Love Is Gonna Lift You Up" "Nothin' Can Save Ya" "Jubilee"
