Maybe Tampa Bay Lightening GM Steve Yzerman was looking out for his former club.
OK, probably not, but Yzerman was an essential facilitator in helping the Detroit Red Wings acquire Colorado Avalanche defenseman Kyle Quincey today.
As the story goes, the Avalanche and Red Wings couldn't come to an agreement over the past week in a direct Quincey swap, so Yzerman stepped in and traded for Quincey in exchange for Steve Downie, then flipped Quincey to Detroit for a Wings first-round pick.
Yzerman was no doubt looking out exclusively for his own club's interest, but it couldn't have hurt that he had such familiarity with Red Wings GM Ken Holland to know that Holland and the Avs were at an impasse, and that he could work as middle man. According to the Detroit Free Press, Yzerman called Holland this morning and asked if Holland would give up a first-rounder for Quincey. When Holland (reluctantly) said that he would, Yzerman made it happen.
Quincey, who was originally a Red Wings draft pick in 2003, gives Detroit much-needed depth and toughness on the blue line -- a commodity that you can never have too much of come playoff time.
Quincey is a restricted free agent at the end of the season, but Holland said that he has every intention of resigning him beyond this year.
