Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann is one of the North Star State’s losers in decennial process of redistricting. The new Minnesota map shows Bachmann’s current residence has been drawn out of her present 6th district. While she plans to make a go of it in November, her political future is not headache-free.
The Minnesota redistricting process has been ongoing for months – the new map was delayed by an impasse between the state’s Republican dominated House and Senate and Democratic Gov. Mark Dayton. The new map is rather friendly to the state’s majority Democratic district. Rep. Bachmann, however, has had her home in Stillwater in Washington County drawn into the new 4th district which, according to redistricting expert Dave Wasserman, voted for President Obama by 62.6 percent in 2008.
The 4th district is presently represented by five-term Democratic Rep. Betty McCollum.
Bachmann announced on Tuesday that she will run for reelection in the 6th district, although she was mum on any plans to pack up and move to meet residency requirements.
Bachmann told reporters “I'll continue my service to the people in the district where I essentially went to junior high, high school, college, had my babies born and we built our business and we have our church and our family.”
David Jarman at DailyKos notes that Bachmann’s alma mater, Winona State University, is actually located in the redrawn 1st district, but “I guess it's OK as long as she qualifies it with "essentially.”
The 6th district is a rural area which is not densely populated and may have even become more Republican than its previous iteration. The district is also presently vacant and is likely a slam dunk for Bachmann.
