Brady Quinn and Tim Tebow have one thing in common: they are both crappy NFL passers. What they don't have in common? Tebow tends to win, while Quinn tends to lose.
Quinn is perhaps not the most authoritative voice to judge Tebow as a quarterback, since he a.) stinks and b.) got beat out by Tebow for the Broncos starting just -- something he is obviously still bitter about. But Quinn -- who is still Tebow's Denver teammate (for now, anyway) -- is getting attention today because he's now on record saying that he wasn't too impressed with what Tebow did last season.
GQ queried a handful of NFL players, coaches and analysts for their thoughts on Tebow, but Quinn's Tebow skepticism sticks out because, you know, he's still Tebow's teammate.
First, he grumbled about how Tebow leapfrogged him on the Broncos depth chart, thanks to the outpouring of public support that Tebow got from Denver fans:
"Early in the season, there was a game when Kyle [Orton] got hurt and the coaches were calling for me to go in, but Kyle got up and finished the game out. So I was the second-string guy," Quinn recalled. "Then, a few weeks later, they decided to put Tim in. I felt like the fans had a lot to do with that. Just 'cause they weere chanting his name. There was a big calling for him. No, I didn't have any billboards. That would have been nice."
It also would have been nice if Brady Quinn ever showed even a fraction of Tebow's ability to win games.
Then, commenting on Tebow's week 10 win over the Chiefs, Quinn rationalized Tebow's success:
"The entire game, the defensive line is chasing the quarterback around, and that wears down the pass rush. Meanwhile, the defensive backs are chasing receivers, but you only throw passes, so they start to feel lazy. It only takes one play, that one big pass, for a touchdown."
Amazingly, Tebow and Quinn have the same amount of NFL pass attempts -- 353. In those attempts, Quinn has made "that one big pass, for a touchdown" 10 times. Tebow has thrown 17 TD passes. But what does Quinn attribute Tebow's greater success to?
"We've (the Broncos in 2011) had a lot of, I guess, luck, to put it simply."
Classy stuff, Brady.
My guess is this will lead the Broncos to seek a new backup quarterback -- which they probably wanted to do anyway, since Brady Quinn kind of stinks.
Oh, and he also said this:
"If you look at it as a whole, there's a lot of things that just don't seem very humble to me. When I get that opportunity, I'll continue to lead not necessarily by trying to get in front of a camera and praying but by praying with my teammates, you know?"
Which part of that do you find most ironic: that Quinn wants to talke about humility, that Quinn used the phrase "continue to lead," or that Quinn thinks he's going to get another opportunity?
