Doot Doot Doo With Rufus Wainwright's New Song "Montauk"

The first preview track from Rufus Wainwright's upcoming Mark Ronson produced new album Out Of The Game (out April 23) traipsed its way online earlier today. It's called "Montauk" and long-time fans will already be able to notice that something's up this time around—what would have been a stark, intimate piano ballad on previous Rufus records is now decked out in swirling, '70s arena rock style synthesizers. (I half expected Muse's Matt Bellamy to come roaring in with a huge windmill power chord.)

No, it's not a four on the floor grinder, but it's evidence enough that Rufus (probably) wasn't being cagey when he promised that Out Of The Game was to be his "poppiest," most "danceable" effort to date. The rolling waves of piano arpeggios and loose, playful lyricism are certainly there, but the Technicolor keyboards give everything a slightly over the top, bombastic feel... and that's certainly saying a lot for a Rufus Wainwright record. I can easily imagine this preceding some overblown, let it all hang out electro disco number with Ronson at the wheel. Time will tell, of course, but Rufus hasn't written an all-out bad song to date-- anything new is reason enough to get excited.
