Texas Rep. Ron Paul may not be the Republican nominee and his ascension to the presidency is, let’s say, unlikely. That has not stopped Paul’s supporters from taking to the White House in recent days in a Jacksonian show of populist reverence for their candidate.
Last week, the picture above made the rounds showing a Ron Paul supporter being greeted by President Obama’s wife and First Lady Michelle Obama.
On Monday, hundreds of current and former uniformed military personnel took to the gates of the White House to show their support for the libertarian presidential candidate. ABC News reports that “the demonstration was mostly a silent affair,” with soldiers holding several moments of reverence for their fallen comrades.
Paul has often touted his campaign’s success in driving donations from active military – he says that his opposition to any and all military conflict abroad that is not backed up by a Congressional declaration of war is responsible for his high support among service men and women.
The Center for Responsible Politics reports that Paul received $95,000 in donations from military personnel between September 2011 and January 2012. President Obama is Paul’s closest competitor for support from the military – Obama’s campaign raised $72,000 in that same period. No other Republican presidential candidate approached either Paul or Obama’s totals.
Will Ron Paul’s supporters in the military move to backing Obama should Paul not receive the GOP nomination in the fall? Supporters feel free to weigh in below.
