Every Monday, SportsOlogy checks in with Arsene Wenger, the French manager of English Premier League club Arsenal. Arsenal has not won a trophy since 2005, and this year has sent Wenger into a depression deeper than the Marianas Trench. It's our obligation as fans of the game to keep track of his mood and the likelihood of suicide. Check out other installments here.
It's funny what a week off can do. We eased up on Arsene last week, believing that a 7-1 win over Blackburn would be enough to tide over our favorite Frenchman for two weeks. My, how wrong we were. Just when it seemed as though his team had begun to click, when it appeared that the squad might finally gel to resemble a top-four club, they reentered European competition and promptly got their asses handed to them by AC Milan in the Champions League.
Before the match in Milan, Wenger apparently gave every one of his starters a Xanax because they looked like they each had the old "Sleepy Eyes Coulibaly" Syndrome. They could not have cared less about preventing AC Milan from scoring if the loser was sentenced to death by bees after the match. Oh, welcome to the penalty area, Zlatan, why don't you just slip the ball back to Robinho for the goal?
If you can make Robinho look consistently dangerous, you might want to rethink your defensive tactics. Something other than "Let them run at you" might be a good start.
That's especially true because the North London derby looms, with the impressive Tottenham Hotspur traveling to the Emirates this Sunday, and with the Gunners' defense in shambles it's difficult to envision anything other than a loss for Wenger's boys. These are dark times for Arsenal.
CAUSE FOR CONCERN: Europe is gone. The Premier League title is out of the question. The FA Cup is a possibility, but it's a consolation prize for a club of Arsenal's stature. Fourth place is in doubt, and if they can't even squeeze that out over Andre Villas-Boas' trainwreck at Chelsea, then Wenger is in real trouble.
THREAT LEVEL: Moderately high. Will the pain never end? Can Arsene somehow pull out a top-four finish and give owners and fans hope for the future? There are still months of winter for Arsene Wenger to survive, and we wish him the best during these troubled times.
