UPDATE: The suspect has been identified as a 29-year-old Moroccan man. His name has not yet been revealed. The FBI had supplied the suspect with a non-functioning gun and inert explosives to carry out a suicide mission in Washington -- he was in the process of carrying out the plot when he was arrested.
“Explosives the suspect allegedly sought to use in connection with the plot had been rendered inoperable by law enforcement and posed no threat to the public,” Justice Department spokesman Dean Boyd said.
A terrorism suspect has been arrested in an FBI sting after he was caught planning to detonate what he believed to be explosives near the U.S. Capitol.
Police briefed AP reporters on the sting and said that the suspect was not arrested on Capitol grounds, but that was the likely target of a suicide attack. The FBI had the suspect under surveillance for several weeks.
The man was arrested after he accepted a fake suicide vest from an undercover FBI operative. U.S. Capitol police were also closely involved in the long operation.
Law enforcement has not revealed whether the suspect was a U.S. citizen or had any connections with Al Qaeda – although he almost certainly thought he had. Like the Klan, Al Qaeda outside Pakistan, Iran and Somalia now appears wholly comprised of FBI informants.
