Interview: 'Vampire Diaries' Star Daniel Gillies Dishes On The "Unspoken" Feelings Between Elijah and Elena

Editor-in-Chief
On Feb 16, 2012

Tonight's Vampire Diaries is gearing up to be a big one. After last week's epic Original family ball, you'd think we'd get a week or two of downtime. But not with this show. The Original siblings will undoubtedly find out that their witchy mother has enlisted Elena to help in this massive diabolical plan to kill them all. Certainly, Elena and Elijah's complicated friendship will suffer as he learns of her betrayal. Meanwhile, the hints at potential feelings between the two may surface.

We caught up with Daniel Gillies [Elijah] about tonight's episode "All My Children" and asked whether he thinks Elijah's feelings for Elena are the real deal. Could they ever work as a couple? Find out below!

Ology: So obviously, last week was a huge episode. Tonight’s a big episode as well. It looks like Elijah finds out Elena betrayed him. What can you tell us?

Elena’s going to be… she's in trouble. The Originals are sorta using her in order to converge against their own mother. Their mother, of course, has kind of doomed them. So I think they need to fight that.

The whole idea that Elijah has feelings for Elena was done so subtlety that I don’t think a lot of us realized what was happening. Will that manifest itself more in the future?

It will do what Julie Plec determines it will do, but it’s really… I like the subtlety with which it was played. I think it's actually more interesting to me than some of the blatant relationships. I like that it’s unspoken. I like that there’s this sort of tranquil mutualism. It’s interesting to me.

But is it real? Is he really attracted to Elena or it just a transfer of his feelings for Katherine?

I don’t think those things are necessarily mutually exclusive. When he first saw her, it must have been a tsunami of feelings and recognition that he hadn't necessarily had in centuries. When he first walked back into the middle of season two and he saw her, he must of thought, wow this is eerie. And certainly, a lot must have come flooding back. However, I think getting to know Elena and just how spectacular she is… it's kind of her moral compass that's the cornerstone of the show and I think he's enchanted by that, for sure.

Right. He also has that moral compass.

Yea he does, but I feel she’s more successful than he is at obeying it.

Really? Elena's ideas always end up being pretty bad, no?

Yeah, but I like people who are clumsy for the right reasons. I don’t mind people making decisions that are poor if they really, really are doing it in the name of love and self-sacrifice. That’s mostly what she does. However idiotic it might seem, it’s very necessary and very traditional of mythology to have somebody who’s not necessarily making the best decision, but is doing them in a heroic fashion. Choices that we wouldn't necessarily make.

The last episode or two kind of brought about this idea that maybe Damon and Stephan aren't good for Elena and perhaps she shouldn't end up with either of them. Is there some world in which you think Elijah and Elena would work as a couple?

Yes, but on a different network and on a different show. I don’t know, I think it’s a very interesting idea of a relationship. I like their relationship. I like that it's sort of dysfunctional and don't seem to have… Within that universe of thinking, you really kind of just want your pretty girl to be with your pretty guy. People start shipping online saying, "I really want this person to be with this person." They never really stray too far from their comfort zone. I think that the shippers that I attract that like the idea of Elena and Elijah are the people that like something a little strange. It would be weird. I can't even imagine Elijah's allowed to feel… he’s certainly attracted to woman and that’s sort of demonstrated in the show.  He’s certainly attracted to Elena. But I don't think he's allowed himself to feel anything for a woman for centuries.

Interesting, do you feel the same way about Klaus?

I imagine, in some ways, at least in the universe that I created in my head. I imagine Elijah has…. I can imagine him just dedicating decades to studying a certain type of a language, [learning] how to build in the mid 17th century.  I don't know. There’s something that I can imagine. I can imagine that he was very resourceful about being immortal. Do you know what I mean? I almost feel like if you could live forever, you might, if you were wise enough, you might be sort of transcendentally thoughtful enough to think that being with somebody else might not necessarily be the best use of time. I’m not saying that I would be that way. I just imagine someone like Elijah thinking, "Like what language do I not speak? What do I not know how to do? What martial art have I not trained in?" Something about him, I feel like immortality is still an opportunity.

Will we learn any more about his background? Are more flashbacks in the coming weeks?

As long as the show continues like this, the more we’re going to know about the Originals and the more we’re going to know about their history.

Were you surprised at all by the positive fan reaction to the Original family?

Um, I was and it's very gratifying. I wasn't immediately popular and certainly there wasn't any stage set for Elijah coming into the show. I was surprised. I came in a little differently from all the other Originals. All the other Originals came in and there was all this talk about them forever. They talked about them for so long before they came in, like "These brothers who sleep in a coffin…" So people were getting excited about it and Elijah turned out... really, I'm not sure I was designed as his brother. I’m positive I wasn't actually. I wasn't [Klaus'] brother. I just ended up that way because of fan reaction. So yeah, I’m delighted. It’s given me a great family with Vampire Diaries and just I feel so happy every day I go to work with those guys.
