While I don't pretend to know the first thing about The Hunger Games, I do know that new music from The Decemberists is always something to get excited about. The hugely anticipated big screen adaptation of Suzanne Collins' contemporary young adult classic hits theaters on March 23, with the star-studded soundtrack album (featuring new songs by Taylor Swift, Arcade Fire, Glen Hansard, The Civil Wars and Kid Cudi, believe it or not) dropping three days earlier.
Check out The Decemberists' contribution "One Engine" right here:
(Is there only a single engine in The Hunger Games? Somewhere in New York, Emily Cheever is rolling her eyes right now.)
As far as The Decemberists are concerned, the song is pretty great— sure, it lifts the galloping drums from "The Infanta" and marries it with an uptempo gothic folk arrangement that wouldn't have sounded out of place on The Crane Wife, but it's infinitely better than the watered down country/folk of The King Is Dead, in my not so humble Colin Meloy-loving opinion.
Patience is a virtue, but if you simply cannot wait to get "One Engine" on your iPod, you can pre-order The Hunger Games: Songs From District 12 And Beyond on iTunes and download The Decemberists' new single now.
