Start Smoking: Study Shows Twitter And Facebook Are More Addictive Than Cigarettes

On Feb 09, 2012

Listen, scum, dregs of Facebook and Twitter, slaves to your keyboards and updates, deprived of all self-confidence save for that which can be captured online and desperate for attention that, in reality, and I mean this reality, not the digital reality, means nothing--you're now worse (mentally) than smokers.

Yes, a recent study done by the University of Chicago shows that Twitter and Facebook are harder to resist than "another beer or mid-day smoke." Here's what they published in Men's Health:

"'To examine our inability to resist our constant cravings, researchers from the University of Chicago outfitted 205 subjects with Blackberrys. For seven days, the researchers messaged the volunteers to ask them about their urges within the past 30 minutes—what kind of desire they experienced, how strong it was and whether they were they able to resist.

"'Resisting the desire to work was likewise prone to fail,” Wilhelm Hofmann, the lead researcher told the Guardian. “In contrast, people were relatively successful at resisting sports inclinations, sexual urges and spending impulses, which seems surprising given the salience in modern culture of disastrous failures to control sexual impulses and urges to spend money.'”

So, there you have it. I need not say more.
