As promised, Bethesda was nice enough to release its long-awaited Skyrim Creation Kit today via the Steam Workshop, and the early results have been so nifty and sensible that console gamers may have to entertain chin-scratching thoughts about jumping onto the PC bandwagon.
For example, much as I enjoy journeying through Skyrim, the swampy marvel of Riften and the frosty nips of Solitude quickly faded to irritation because my horsey valet could never learn to take me to the front door of my many houses, instead depositing me at the city gates. Bad Shadowmere! Thanks to user Smakit, a new mod adds map markers to all five house locations so players can quick travel directly to their front door.
Other handy mods let players level up items, craft arrows in large bundles and plop alchemy satchels onto the alchemy tables in every buyable house. Finally, a cozy, convenient home for all those Giant Toes. More ambitious modders are already building ice islands and grander additions can't be far behind.
Bethesda has detailed many of the ins and outs of Skyrim modding in this primer, including helpful instructions on how to find and install mods. For those with more daring in their hearts, this blog post outlines important pointers on modding for fun and pleasure while the video below offers Bethesda's first entry in a series of modding lessons.
