Chronicle could've easily ran with the big blockbusters of the summer, but perhaps it's better that this film has a debut in the dead of winter. A surprisingly intense and dark story similar to the somewhat genre-less school of Kick Ass and Scott Pilgrim, the film is a good start for the careers of everyone involved. The story follows three boys, one of them Ology favorite Michael B. Jordan, who discover a strange glowing object underground which gives them superpowers. As one of the boys battles with his own demons, the rest attempt to reel him back into reality and safety.

Check out our interview with star Michael B. Jordan!

Not that the film is without flaw- the pacing is a little slow in the beginning, mostly due to the scenes of our boys playing with their new found powers. If a teenager was suddenly blessed with powerful telekinesis (which includes the ability to fly) they would have just as much fun testing their powers as the director Josh Trank had showing it.   The sincere "bro" moments are occasionally overwrought but somehow necessary to the character development. Still, the content is there and the action is pleasantly surprising.

The overlying theme of constant surrounding of cameras is fine. The new mot of the found footage can sometimes be a little tiring (and to sensitive viewers, a little dizzying) but they set up the introductions and transitions between each camera admirably, so suspension of disbelief only occasionally creeps through the viewers mind (green screens don't help this).

With all of this Chronicle is a whole lot of fun and I would recommend it to anyone would finds the current selection at the multiplex a little boring. Definitely would be my preemptive choice for a Valentines Day treat if a movie is your only option. But fare warning to the lovers out there, there are some somewhat disturbing moments. Plus, you'll probably be too busy daydreaming about what you would do if you had telekinesis to focus on the rest of the date.
