The 54th annual Grammy Awards air Sunday, February 12 at 8pm EST on CBS.
It never fails... each year, you think long and hard about your list of Grammy predictions, only to tune in Sunday to discover that, yeah, whoops, you weren't even close. Why? Because you and I can think rationally about music and the National Association of Recording Arts and Sciences cannot. (Imagine I'm saying all this like Colonel Landa in Inglourious Basterds.) So, in the spirit of attempting to think like the NARAS, I've divided this year's obligatory Grammy Prediction cycle into two separate categories—who WILL win, and who SHOULD win.
(Don't like any of the nominees? Of course you don't. It's why you should vote now in our first-annual ANTI-GRAMMY Awards.)
Today's Category:
Best Pop Performance (Solo and Duo/Group)
Solo Nominees:
Adele - "Someone Like You"
Lady Gaga - "Yoü And I"
Bruno Mars - "Grenade"
Katy Perry - "Firework"
Pink - "F—kin' Perfect"
Duo/Group Nominees:
Tony Bennett & Amy Winehouse - "Body And Soul"
The Black Keys - "Dearest"
Coldplay - "Paradise"
Foster The People - "Pumped Up Kicks"
Maroon 5 feat. Christina Aguilera - "Moves Like Jagger"
Will Win:
"Someone Like You" and "Moves Like Jagger". Adele deserves every award she's up for, but there really wasn't much avoiding that damned Maroon 5 last year, was there? I don't know what The Black Keys and Foster The People are even doing in this category... that just leaves Coldplay (whose "Paradise" deserves to win something, I'll admit) and Tony Bennett and Amy Winehouse (see below).
Should Win:
"Someone Like You" and "Body And Soul". Again, Adele is going to win everything—but Tony and Amy feels like the obvious choice to me for Duo/Group. We lost Winehouse last year (i.e. last chance to give her a Grammy) and Tony Bennett had an amazing year with Duets II making history at the top of the Billboard charts. Yes, it was a more or less straightforward take on an old standard, but their "Body And Soul" gets my vote, hands down
