Sigh, the New Order/Peter Hook drama continues—one week after Hook filed cease and desist paperwork to stop his former bandmates from carrying on under the New Order, singer/guitarist Bernard Sumner tells XFM that, while the band are currently focused on their upcoming UK tour dates, they haven't ruled out returning to the studio to work on the first New Order in seven years... and the first without Hooky on bass.

"Not even thinking about [writing and recording] at the moment because our heads are really on playing live," said Sumner. "It really is one day at a time - or one year at a time - and this year is playing live." He later added: "Let's see. Hopefully there'll be some recorded music as well."
I've gone this long without settling on a final opinion about the current New Order line-up (the band reunited last year with original keyboardist Gillian Gilbert and Bad Lieutenant's Tom Chapman handling bass duties... Hook wasn't notified or invited), but Sumner has forced my hand—no, I don't think New Order shouldn't be recording new music without Peter Hook. At least, not as New Order. The surviving members of Joy Division re-dubbed themselves after the death of Ian Curtis because they didn't want to keep doing the same old thing without one of the core members... I don't understand why the same logic doesn't apply to Hook's absence. If Gillian Gilbert hadn't bothered to show up... if they weren't playing "Blue Monday" and "Temptation" every night... it'd be just plain old Bad Lieutenant again. Live shows are one thing, but studio albums are forever-- no, it wouldn't be New Order without Peter Hook's bass any more than it would've been Joy Division without Curtis at the mic.
