The AP reports that at least 40 people have been killed in Egypt today during violence following a soccer match between Al-Masry and Al-Ahly. Al-Masry fans stormed the field after defeating Egyptian league leaders Al-Ahly, 3-1, and as you can see from the video below, the scene devolved into a rash of violence in a hurry.
Soccer violence in Egypt -- and, in fact, in most of the rest of the world -- is nothing new. Sad instances of death and severe injury have plagued the game for years, often with cultural or socioeconomic associations with clubs or countries helping to push fans to physical aggression. Egypt-Algeria national games, for example, have recently been frought with fan and player violence.
