Some sad news for music fans— Soul Train creator and original host Don Cornelius was found dead in his Sherman Oaks, California home earlier this morning. He was 75 years old. Details are still sketchy, but TMZ and Billboard are both reporting that Cornelius died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Created in 1971, Soul Train (still the longest continually-running program in television history) was a hugely popular and influential musical variety program that featured boisterous performances from both established and breaking soul, R&B, funk, hip-hop, jazz and gospel artists. The show (and it's recurring troupe of Soul Train Dancers) was the best known and most beloved showcase of popular black music for 35 years—its cultural impact cannot be overstated, and much if not all of the credit goes toward Cornelius and his love of and dedication to all of the great artists he hosted over the years.
