It's that time of the year again when Vanity Fair publishes its annual Hollywood Issue and every editor dissects the mag's ulterior motives (see: possible racism, general disdain for anyone who's not a size 2), and this time, I kind of agree with the backlash.
While Rooney Mara (very white), Jennifer Lawrence (also white), Jessica Chastain (white again) and Mia Wasikowska (still white) nabbed the cover, actresses Adepero Oduyu and Paul Patton are the only representing women of color - 2 out of 11 isn't bad, but considering an office-wide inquiry of Ms. Oduyu's recent roles was met with an, "I think I know that name, let me IMDB it" and "Oh, I've heard of that girl, wait, no. I haven't," I'm wondering if a more deserving actress in Golden Globe winner Octavia Spencer may have been left out due to her weight. The rest of the 20s-inspired Jazz Age fantasy spread includes ladies like Elizabeth Olsen, Shailene Woodley, Felicity Jones, Lily Collins and Brit Marling and is admittedly lovely.
Do you think Vanity Fair purposefully left out Octavia Spencer (or better yet, Melissa McCarthy) due to her weight? Talk back below or tweet me your thoughts.
