Colbert's Super PAC Raises $1 Million: But What Will They Do With It?

On Jan 31, 2012

Comedy Central host Stephen Colbert’s “Super PAC” announced on Tuesday that they had raised over $1 million.

The PAC, “Americans for a Better Tomorrow, Tomorrow,” previously known as “The Definitely Not Coordinating With Stephen Colbert Super PAC,” was once actively promoted by Colbert until he decided to enter the Republican nominating race in earnest by attempting to get on the ballot in South Carolina. Colbert handed over control of his satirical PAC to fellow comedian and Comedy Central host of “The Daily Show” Jon Stewart.

Colbert’s PAC’s donors include an unsurprisingly liberal cast of characters; from former San Francisco Mayor and current Lieutenant Governor of California Gavin Newsom ($500) to “West Wing” star Bradley Whitford. The PAC also amassed a number of small dollar donations from the Colbert fans around the country.

Colbert’s PAC had directed funds to run television ads and web ads in many of the major Republican primary states; the PAC’s strategic comedy has been evolving over the election year. Originally, the PAC ran generic ads or parody ads supporting no particular individual (“vote Rick Parry”), but later turned to supporting actual candidates – in South Carolina, the PAC ran ads supporting former Republican candidate Herman Cain (though Cain had long since left the race).

Cain even seemed to be playing along, making appearances with Colbert and endorsing “the people.” Over the weekend, Cain dropped his faux-comedy act and endorsed Newt Gingrich.

So the question becomes, where does Colbert’s PAC spend its cash now?

Colbert’s PAC risks angering voters, both Democratic and Republican, who do not appreciate the shenanigans that the comedian is playing with the presidential race. His PAC should be advised to tread lightly into an emerging campaign season where emotions will run hot and the stakes will be high – people do take this stuff seriously, even if Colbert and his fans do not.
