10 Models To Watch During Fall/Winter 2012

On Jan 30, 2012

Showpackages being released can only mean one thing: fashion week is around the corner. The first leg of F/W 12 will be held in New York as usual and is only days away. Models are flying in from all around the world to attend casting after casting, and the casting directors are narrowing down the hundreds of girls to a select few. Everybody has their favorite vets, but one of the most exciting things about fashion week is discovering the new girls and predicting who will walk the best and the most shows. I called upon a couple of friends to help me choose a list of ten girls that are expected to dominate this season.

Bonae L'amour's founder and photographer Damian Bao's picks:

  • Josefien Rodermans, Netherlands (Supreme)

“The hybrid lovechild of Freja Beha Erichsen and Arizona Muse, this Calvin Klein exclusive has been on my radar way before her fashion week debut. Fall/Winter 2012 will be her true full run in New York. She is refined elegance and a silent beauty that everyone should continue to keep their eyes out for! She just opened the Chanel Haute Couture Spring/Summer 2012 show too.” -Damian Bao

Highlights: Calvin Klein exclusive, opened Chanel couture, and snatched up the most recent See by Chloé campaign.

  • Valerija Sestic, Switzerland (Women)

“The controversial newcomer that landed a feature on “The Wall Street Journal” for underage catwalking during NYFW makes quite a presence on and off the runways. She is a beautiful girl with a very magnetic and charismatic personality. I am sure casting directors and designers will continue to love her along with the massive following of photographers and bloggers she has already caught the attention of. Regardless of her age, Valerija really has ‘the model factor.’” -Damian Bao

Highlights: Wall Street Journal controversy, D&G Spring 2012 campaign, and many lucrative bookings for her first season. Women Management also listed her as one of their most promising newcomers.

  • Magda Laguinge, Argentina (Next)

“The unique beauty that opened the Marc Jacobs Spring/Summer 2012 show, Magda is such a captivating dark beauty. I love how nonchalant she is about fashion and all the attention. In addition, I love her mad colorful street style. She really knows how to color block!” -Damian Bao

Highlights: Opened Marc Jacobs and starred in Topshop’s spring campaign. She most recently walked in the Chanel Haute Couture show in Paris.

Junior Booker and Blogger Demi Sinclair's picks:

  • Katryn Kruger, South Africa (IMG)

“Katryn is a South African model who recently featured in the Prada campaign and has such elegance and poise on the runway. I have a feeling well be seeing Katryn a lot in the upcoming show season.” -Demi

Highlights: Booked the Prada campaign and featured in Jalouse Magazine. Most recently walked at couture week and opened/closed Valentino haute couture.

  • Ella Verberne, New Zealand (IMG)

“Coming from Clyne models in New Zealand, this 17-year-old Dutch-Chinese model is one to watch for Fall 2012, which will be her first international runway season.” -Demi
Highlights: Featured in Black Magazine and most recently signed with IMG.
  • Yasmin Bidois, New Zealand (Ford)

“Another Kiwi, Yasmin is of French-Maori (native NZ) descent and has a very distinct look that I hope will take her far.” -Demi

Highlights: Just recently signed with Ford.

Ology freelance writer and blogger Chelsea Bell's picks:
  • Romee Strijd, Netherlands (DNA)

In only her first season, this sixteen year old Dutch model scooped up an impressive list of 16 shows. The number may seem small compared to some more experienced models, but it’s not everyday that a newbie gets to walk for names like Alexander McQueen and Céline her first time around. She’s been compared to vets like Candice Swanepoel, Lindsey Wixson, and Magdalena Frackowiak, but if Romee does just half as well as she did last season, she’ll stand on her own in no time. Newly sixteen, Romee is set to attend castings for NYFW for the first time this season.

Highlights: Opened and closed Christopher Kane before wrapping up S/S 12 with a stellar showlist. Romee walked for the likes of Prada, Jil Sander, Balmain, Isabel Marant, Celine, YSL, Louis Vuitton, Alexander McQueen and more. Featured in the Alexander McQueen S/S 12 lookbook and British Vogue multiple times.
  • Frida Aasen, Norway (DNA)

Frida represents the quirky alien-like model generation that the fashion industry is currently obsessing over. In just her first season, she walked for Prada and Louis Vuitton as an exclusive in Paris. The fashion house liked her so much that they brought her back to shoot the Pre-Fall 2012 lookbook alongside Nyasha Matonhodze and Xiao Wen Ju. In recent news, Frida moved from her motheragency Joy Milan to Women Milan. Does this mean a more lucrative show season for F/W 12? One can only hope.

Highlights: Louis Vuitton exclusive, Prada booking, and features in Numéro Magazine. Upcoming cover girl for the March issue of Dazed & Confused.
  • Moa Åberg, Sweden (IMG)

Moa is a Swedish newcomer that IMG has taken under their wing. She’s been gaining experience at home, but rumors are swirling that an exclusive for NYFW could be in the works. With the CFDA’s strict age limit, a prestigious exclusive might be the best thing for her at this time. Her agency would be smart to let her walk for a select amount of major shows and wait until she turns sixteen to let her leave the nest. Even with the age barrier, however, Moa screams of potential. We can’t wait to see her on the runway!

Highlights: Featured in Bon Magazine, Calvin Klein presentation and T by Alexander Wang lookbook.
  • Karlie Kloss, U.S. (Next)

Karlie was undoubtedly one of the most talked about models last year, so it’s no surprise that she made it to my list. It’s a little unfair to peg newbies against a veteran, but I’m almost definite that F/W 12 will be yet another runway season that Kloss will dominate. Not only does she have the look and walk down, but she’s got the personality that casting directors will eat up. And with her newly transformed it girl image and the word supermodel floating around, designers will surely want Karlie in their clothes.

Highlights: American Vogue favorite, multiple OG campaigns, and her racy Vogue Italia cover and nude spread. Karlie has been for around 5 years and may look young, but she’s got the it factor that puts her head to head with the supers.
