The parade of the MMO industry's greats into the freemium realm continues with the grand-daddy of the modern MMO, EverQuest: SOE's officially announced that the online standby will join its sequel as a free-to-play game. It's scheduled to go free-to-play this March, which is the same month in which it originally launched some 13 years ago. EverQuest was an absolute sensation upon release, charming legions of gamers into its digital world. Before World of Warcraft set the standard that defines today's most successful titles, EverQuest pit bands of heroes against oversized adversaries, just as modern raids do to great success.
This past October, at GDC Online, EverQuest was inducted into the Hall of Fame--but the way there was often fraught with peril. The original EverQuest was a challenging and sometimes soul-crushing experience. Levels were hard to attain, death and transportation could dominate gameplay, and some dragons spawned just once per server. And by some, I mean one. That jerkface.
If you never played EQ back in the day, I encourage you to get out there and try the old-school MMO on for size: Updates over the game's 13-year lifespan have made life much easier on the players. If you're a veteran, there's no better excuse to go back to your glory days than a free-to-play conversion. But then, what do I know? I only played Champions of Norrath.
