If you hadn't already heard, reclusive neo-soul genius D'Angelo is back in a big way—his long-rumored third album is reportedly almost finished and, most exciting of all, he's been premiering new material on stage in Europe... that is, when he isn't busy performing a spot-on rendition of David Bowie's signature epic "Space Oddity". No, I don't have any idea why D'Angelo is covering it either, but it's beyond fantastic, so best not to question these things.
Unlike his recent cover of "Black Hole Sun" (see above), it's a pretty straightforward, note-for-note version. You can't really see his abs in the video, but the audio quality is surprisingly good—that's D'Angelo himself on the acoustic guitar, completely nailing the signature strums towards the end. (Come on, Paris, it would've killed you all to clap along?) It's a little hard to listen to "Space Oddity" with a straight face in this post-Flight Of The Conchords world, but D'Angelo treats it with soulful seriousness.
If you're reading this, D'Angelo, I'll buy 100 copies of your covers album, whenever you decide to record and release it... just an FYI.
