Curious as it may seem -- especially during an election year -- President Obama enjoyed a personal visit from former President George H.W. Bush and former Florida Governor Jeb Bush on Friday. However, the White House was quick to dismiss that there was any collusion, saying that the visit was just a simple presidential courtesy and something that the men have done in the past when George HW visits the capital. The former president is in Washington to attend the Alfalfa Club dinner where Obama is scheduled to speak on Saturday.
During the personal meeting, George HW was seated in a wheelchair. Bush spokesman Jim McGrath said that "his legs don't work the way he wants them to" but Bush is in "fine health and he's not in any pain." The relationships between the three men have been fairly cozy since the current administration took over. Obama awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom (the nation's highest civilian honor) to George HW for his contributions to society noting the former president is "a testament that public service is a noble calling." As for Obama's relationship with Jeb Bush, the two were together in Miami last March to tout education reform.
Although the President may just be extending courtesy due to all former Presidents (and he will surely receive the same treatment from those who succeed him), it's interesting to note the increasingly heavy hand that George HW Bush has had in running the nation since 1980 from his own term, Clinton's term, his son's term and now Obama's. He's been the only constant through the decades with the two party's exchange of power in the White House. It's no wonder that GOP candidates have been courting him to endorse them as the Republican challenge to Obama. (George HW has already declared Mitt Romney his choice).
So was the meeting awfully cozy, or just a simple presidential courtesy?
