A few years ago it would've sounded like a joke, but last night in Stockholm, the one and only D'Angelo (yes, the real D'Angelo, not a cardboard cutout or Dave Chapelle in a costume) stepped onto a stage for the first time in more than a decade, performing a double-handful of classics off his two neo-soul masterworks, Brown Sugar and Vooodoo, which (coincidentally?) celebrated its 12-year anniversary yesterday.
D'Angelo and his beyond-tight band also premiered two brand new tunes—"Sugar Daddy" and "The Charade". Check 'em out below (via Consequence Of Sound):
"Sugar Daddy"
"The Charade"
The audio/video quality is obviously less than ideal, but holy damn—both tunes sound absolutely amazing. "The Charade" especially—that guitar tone he's rocking is still giving me the shivers. Long-time collaborator ?uestlove promises that D'Angelo's long-rumored third album is finally nearing completion—if these two songs are any indication, it'll be another seamless masterpiece from neo-soul's reclusive but undisputed genius.
