Retiring Massachusetts Rep. Barney Frank announced today his intention to marry his longtime partner Jim Ready.
The 71-year-old openly gay Democrat from Massachusetts 4th district announced on Thursday his plans to marry his partner, but has not yet set a date.
Last November, Frank announced his intention to retire at the end of this term in January, 2013. Frank, currently serving his 16th term in the House, was first elected in 1981. Among the reasons he cited for his retirement was his desire to spend more time with his partner.
Ready has been an active part of Frank’s reelection efforts over the years – in 2010, Ready was the center of a controversy when video surfaced of him aggressively heckling Frank’s Republican opponent, Sean Beilat, a U.S. Marine veteran. Ready mocked Beilat’s jokes and called him “dude” repeatedly:
Ready, described as a surfing enthusiast, met Frank at a fundraiser in Maine where Ready resides. Ready and Frank have long been considered Washington’s most powerful gay couple.
