The Kremlin-funded Russian television news network “Russia Today” has given Wikileaks’ founder Julian Assange his own talk program.
Filming of Assange’s television program is already reportedly underway at his home outside London where he remains under house arrest while he appeals an extradition order to Sweden.
The program, tentatively titled “The World Tomorrow,” will host “political thinkers” and “revolutionaries” to discuss issues of the day. Russia Today’s YouTube channel boasts a half billion viewers.
Critics charge that Russia Today amounts to an anti-Western propaganda network operated by Vladimir Putin’s Kremlin. Putin himself called Assange’s arrest on charges that he engaged in sexual misconduct with two Swedish women “hypocritical.”
Russia Today is not shy when it comes to controversial publicity stunts. The network pushed to get billboards in airports across the U.S. that showed pictures of President Barack Obama next to Iranian President Ahmed Ahmadinejad with the subhead “who poses the greatest nuclear threat?” American airports refused to post the billboards but they did run in airports across Europe.
