Watch Florence + The Machine's Non-Racist New Video, "Lover To Lover"

Music Editor
On Jan 26, 2012

Florence Welch took a lot of heat for the interpretably pseudo-racist imagery in last year's "No Light, No Light" music video (see below), so I suppose it makes sense that she opted for a relatively straightforward, performance-based treatment for her latest video, "Lover To Lover". The larger than life heathen pop goddess is hitting the road this spring, making stops at Coachella and the New Orleans Jazz Fest—if you haven't been completely blown away by Ceremonials (one Ology's favorite indie/alternative records of last year) yet, "Lover To Lover" is as good a place as any to start.

It's a great performance, though I have to say, I miss the reverb-drenched, gloriously overblown studio version. The band sound great (the harp is an especially nice touch), the cold blue lighting is fantastic, and Florence herself really works that Drowning Virginia Wolfe look better and bolder than ever. Some of the angles are a little questionable (what's up with that wide shot of her back at 2:16?), but it's hard to find much else faulty with Florence + The Machine doing their thing live.
