Peter Hook Responds To Disney's Joy Division T-Shirt Travesty

It's either the most inadvertently ingenious or remorselessly evil marketing idea of all time (probably both), but yes, The Disney Store have completely sold out of their controversial new Mickey Mouse t-shirt—you know, the one that apes Joy Division's iconic Unknown Pleasures cover design (see below). Responses to the t-shirt design have ranged from bemusement to outright vitriol (raises a guilty hand), but the one group that have remained conspicuously mum on the subject are the surviving members of Joy Division themselves, New Order.

Facepalm: Disney Unveils 'Unknown Pleasures'-Inspired T-Shirt

"Not to my knowledge," says estranged ex-bassist Peter Hook, responding to MTV Hive's inquiry as to whether the other members of New Order (or, ahem, Factory Records graphic designer Peter Saville, who was responsible for the original Joy Division sleeve) approved or collaborated on the shirt. "Since the others don't talk to me I wouldn't know... I have seen a lot of Mickey Mouse t-shirts in my time. But I have to say this is probably the best... I hope that [Disney] will be as understanding when we start doing Donald Duck shirts." (via Pitchfork)

So there you have it—Peter Hook, one of the most notoriously grumpy rock musicians in recent memory, has officially laughed off the Disney Unknown Pleasures t-shirt pseudo-controversy. Personally, I'm going to take that as my cue to shrug it off as well... while secretly hunting for one on eBay.

What do you guys think about the Joy Disney-vision t-shirt and Peter Hook's surprising reaction? Hit up our comments section below.
