Okay, Mother Nature, spring can officially start any time now—there's new Andrew Bird music in the air. Everyone's favorite whistling Chicagoan violinist has a new album called Break It Yourself dropping on March 6 via Mom + Pop. If you're lucky enough to catch him on tour this year, you'll be gifted with a free download of the album plus two exclusive live EPs. Can't beat it!
It sounds a lot... no, I mean, a lot... like the first two Shins albums. No complaints here, though—Andrew hasn't sounded this "rock n' roll" since Armchair Apocrypha, and it's a welcome return to that album's mix of lush, feel-good melodies and buzzy electric guitars. Of course, it wouldn't be a proper Andrew Bird single without a "don't even try to resist joining in" whistling solo, and this one's a real doozy. (1:35) Love the characteristically playful lyrics... really love the gloomy chord changes that kick off around 2:38... I'm officially twice (or maybe three times, shrug) as excited to hear the rest of this album.
