Joe Paterno is critically ill and nearing death, Michael Sisak of the Citizen's Voice in Wilkes-Barre reports. Just before 6 p.m. Saturday Sisak tweeted that Paterno's family and closest friends are gathering at Paterno's hospital bedside to say their final goodbyes to the Penn State coach. Another source says Paterno was removed from a respirator this morning.
"Over the last few days Joe Paterno has experienced health complications, Paterno family spokesman Dan McGinn said in a statement to the Asssociated Press. "His doctor now characterizes his status as serious.
"His family will have no comment on the situation and asks their privacy be respected during this difficult time."
Joe Paterno turned 85 on Dec. 21.
Considering his age and everything he has been through in the past few months, it is not surprising but no less sad that Paterno's health would be failing. Paterno has been receiving chemotherapy treatments since November.
We will update the story as details emerge.
May God be with him.
UPDATE: Paterno's family says doctors consider Joe's condition to be "serious."
