We GeekOlogists are an inventive breed—throughout human history, geeks across the globe have introduced gadgets, lifehacks, and innovations to improve the world around us. Just imagine what life might be like without some of the brilliant inventions of the last fifty years! And I'm not talking about big-picture stuff like the Internet and smartphones and the SHAMWOW, here. Where would we be without power strips? Garage door openers? Sporks? These little solutions can have a huge effect on our daily lives—and that's why the website Quirky helps eager inventors make their schematics into reality.
Quirky is a site that accepts invention submissions, then funds projects that earn acclaim within the community. For a small fee, anyone can send Quirky an idea for a product. Quirky's community then discusses the features and shortcomings of the product. Community favorites move forward to a staff evaluation, where Quirky's team rates it in three categories: design potential, marketing potential, and viability. Each product that gets this far receives a score out of 100 points, with the highest-scoring invention earning the right to be Quirky's next official project. The winner shows up on store shelves nationwide and earns its inventor perpetual royalties. That's money... forever.
Of course, that doesn't compare to the sheer satisfaction of knowing that you've improved the lives of consumers across America. Previous Quirky inventions have done just that: The flexible surge protector has made humanity the master of tricky corner wiring, while Cordies, rubber cord organizers that tame tangled wires, have saved us dozens of accidental power-downs. Could your own invention be the next to win Quirky's support? All it takes is an airtight write-up, some clever visuals, and a dream. Get to work on solving the problems of today and become a hero of tomorrow!
