Today, the former CEO and Republican presidential candidate too to the stage with comedian and faux Republican candidate Stephen Colbert to announce his endorsement for president in 2012… "the people."
"My unconventional endorsement is… the people," Cain exclaimed as he held out for applause that never materialized. "We the people are still in charge." How "the people" managed to take out SOPA in a pre-endorement world, I'll never know.
Herman Cain could not have picked a worse day to attempt humorous satire, if you can call it that. Today, Rick Perry drops out of the Republican race and endorses Newt Gingrich, the Speaker’s ex-wife’s allegations emerge that he was attempting a polyamorous relationship back in the day and three polls show a massive swing in the minds of the electorate in a pivotal primary state. On top of all that, there is an important debate tonight, speculation about which will dominate the news this evening… Bad day to try to grab headlines. Although, it worked on me.
But, try he did. Cain annouced several days ago that an "unconventional endorsement" was coming. That kind of a statement seldom auguries well, and it was no surprise that his event today would be a monumental flop – but in wasting the country’s time today, even for just 20 minutes, Cain demonstrated less self-awareness and more tone deafness than he showed us in the campaign… which was considerable.
Feel free to watch this drivel, if you’re bored. I assure you, this will not cure your ennui. It will, however, make you glad that you do not see Herman Cain on tonight's debate stage.
