Earlier this morning, Apple made its scheduled education announcement at the Guggenheim Museum here in NYC, and as the tech world predicted, it outlined a new three-pronged strategy for Apple's education integration. Textbook support on iBooks, a new desktop app called iBooks Author, and the expansion of iTunes U into a full-fledged app were all on the agenda, and now, all three are available for download. Let's get to it!
iBooks 2, the new version of the official app, inlcudes textbooks thanks to Apple's partnerships with Pearson, McGraw-Hill, and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. Together, these three publishing giants account for 90% of textbooks found in U.S. high schools. Apple will be offering digital versions of these publishers' textbooks through iBooks--the first titles launch today for $14.99 or less.
In addition, Apple's rolling out a new free dekstop app called iBooks Author, which will allow publishers to add visuals, interactive elements, and other widgets to their books.
Finally, Apple has expanded iTunes U: Along with the educational podcasts at the core of the program, Apple's added new functionality that allows teachers to share lecture videos, syllabi, and other materials with their students.
Man, I really wish employers/grad schools/people I date would start officially recognizing my degree from iTunes U. It's legit!
