Hi there, GeekOlogist! How's your SOPA blackout day going? Hope you don't have any important papers due or passionate discussions scheduled with your fellow Internet denizens: Wikipedia and Reddit are both down in protest of SOPA and PIPA, acts that threaten privacy and free speech online. From the looks of my social network feeds, the blackouts are giving public awareness about the acts a massive boost--people everywhere are getting involved to defend the free Internet against the controversial legislation.
The best ways to get involved in the fight against SOPA are signing the petition to declare your support, contacting your local Congress representatives and state legislators to voice your dissent, and blacking out your own social network pages, websites, and blogs in solidarity with the big dogs. If you've a creative bent, you can also do something like the vigilant Internet guardians at LaughPong. Forest Gibson and co. have just given the world its SOPA blackout protest song: "The Day The LOLcats Died." It's actually both catchy and savvy, with an accessible message and a lot of heart. Watch it and know you're standing up during a truly historic moment.
Speak freely and stand bravely, Ologists, and there will never be a day the LOLcats died.
