'Resident Evil: Retribution' Is Now 'Re5ident Evil'

On Jan 12, 2012

The Resident Evil movies continue their dread conquest of the American cinema with Resident Evil: Retribution, the latest entry in the series. While I'm not the biggest fan of the RE flicks, I respect that they're more interested than most adaptations in staying true to the feel, if not the facts, of the source material. Also, anything that provides Milla Jovovich with a steady parade of butts to kick earns my approval right out of the gate. That said, the film's new name has me a little wary about its overall quality. On Sept. 14, 2012, you'll get to see the film that now goes by Re5ident Evil: Retribution. I think I'm just going to start calling it "Re-five-ident Evil." Let's make this a thing!

For all the silliness of its new name, Resident Evil: Retribution promsies some nice shoutouts to more recent games in the series: A new interview reveals that Ada Wong, Barry Burton, and yes, Leon Kennedy will be appearing in the movie due to fan requests. Retribution is also lifting a vehicle/turret sequence straight out of the games, so you're likely to see some familiar action if you're a veteran zombie slayer. Rumor also has it that the latest film in the saga will feature antagonists infested by Las Plagas, the tenatacled parasites that appear in RE4. Why Las Plagas? The beasties allow their hosts to do non-zombie things like run around, drive motorbikes, and use firearms. In the games, the hosts are mostly confined to being really creepy and trying to hit you with farming equipment, but there's something to be said for artistic license.

Will Resident Evil: Retribution--excuse me, Re Five Ident Evil--be a decent flick? It's too early to tell. I have high hopes, but then again, I'm a sucker for a good old-fashioned 3-D zombie killfest.
