Social networks are pretty good at organizing life, but they've yet to figure out how to manage death. The new If I Die Facebook app hopes to address that problem by allowing users to create a message that will be made available for reading and/or viewing should the user pass away unexpectedly. I'll just give you a minute to go, "Huh what?" Did you do it? It doesn't matter if your coworkers made weird faces or whatever--you "huh what?" whenever you feel like it, Ologist.
When you get right down to it, this is probably a useful service: I can definitely imagine cases where hearing or reading a message from a departed loved one would be comforting. Still, the union of so solemn a practice with a now-ubiquitous social network makes me feel a little weirded out. Whatever happened to the video tape cleverly hidden behind a significant book in your vast, sprawling study? Sitting and recording a message from the beyond using your webcam must be a strange experience. I'm just not sure what exactly to think about what's at work with the If I Die Facebook app, so I'll let you watch this informative video that explains the features and uses of the application. It's narrated by a British dude, which is appropriate, because if I ever made a message for those left behind after my untimely passing, I'd like for it to be narrated by a British dude.
Let's all share our thoughts about this in the comments! Then let's forget about death and rock out to some gorramn cowbell music.
