The iCade Jr. Is Your iPhone's New Best Friend

On Jan 10, 2012

You guys remember the iCade, Ion's arcade cabinet device for the iPad? We were fortunate enough to get one here in the office and let me tell you, it was glorious. Sadly, I'm not old enough to remember the Golden Age of arcade gaming, but I do remember the sort of fall-of-Rome, step-on-pedals-and-shoot-stuff era, and the iCade jacks into that particular nostalgia node. Better yet, you don't have to battle the kiddies at Chuck E. Cheese for a chance at digital bliss. Now, the iCade Jr. promsies to replicate its bigger brother's success on a smaller scale: While the original was built for the iPad, this new cabinet is the perfect size for your iPhone (or your iPod Touch, if you're rocking one of those).

The design of the iCade Jr. is pretty similar to the reliable, sturdy, and surprisingly authentic construction of the iCade. The main difference is that four of the eight buttons have moved to the back--I assume this is either to save space or to enhance gameplay in some of the associated titles. Other than that, the Jr. model functions like its larger counterpart: Slide in your iPhone, connect via Bluetooth, and play any of the 100+ compatible games. Frogger, Pac-Man, and Missile Command all await your joystick mojo!

In addition to this new iCade, Ion's planning to release the iCade Mobile, which is sort of like a SEGA Game Gear with a slot for an iPhone/iPod Touch. They're also working on the iCade Core, which is an iPad-compatible fightstick without the arcade cabinet.

The iCade Jr. is so adorable! I must acquire one immediately. Siri, locate your soulmate posthaste.
