Facebook, Meet 'Marvel: Avengers Alliance'

On Jan 10, 2012

Facebook games are like a box of chocolates: Sometimes, it's really important to find the coconut. Wait, no, that's not what I meant. Facebook games are like a box of chocolates because there now exists a multitude of different flavors and styles, but it's tough to know which you're getting until you take a bite. Also, they're all basically chocolate, with some extra bells and whistles, and... You know what? I think this metaphor is getting away from me. Let's get right to it and talk about Marvel: Avengers Alliance instead.

What is Avengers Alliance? Why, it's a newly-announced Facebook game from Disney Interactive, in development at Playdom. As game's story goes, a weird purple light (True Believers may know more than I do about its nature and origin) buffs the world's supervillains, leaving S.H.I.E.L.D. scrambling to defend civilization. You take on the role of a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent who must collect--er, assemble--the heroes of the Marvel universe and take on the baddies in head-to-head duels. You're also responsible for training the heroes you collect: You'll use something called ISO-8 to improve your spandex-clad virtual pets. Destructoid's Harry Monogenis predicts that ISO-8 will be Marvel: Avengers Alliance's pay currency, which makes sense for a Facebook game.

Unlike most similar social games, Avengers Alliance will also feature PvP, so you can throw down with your friends' heroes and villains. The framework of this game sounds promising, but if it's really a pay-for-perks scheme, I think I'll be inclined to give it no more than a casual try. After all, every chocolate in the box is still chocolate. See? I was totally going somewhere with that.
