This has been the most bizarre day in Happy Valley since, well, not all that long ago I suppose. Honestly, I'm not totally sure what is going on over there right now, but the internet is lit up right now with all kinds of cyptic reports and speculation, most of it leading us to this question: why has Penn State not yet given any sort of confirmation that they are actually hiring Bill O'Brien?
Some -- most notably Darren Rovell -- are beginning to wonder if the O'Brien hiring may yet fall through. But it should be said that Darren Rovell loves Twitter so much that he probably believes everything he reads there.
Ace reporter Sara Ganim from the Harrisburg Patriot-News tweeted "Source just told me that as of 4pm #PSU told current coaching staff that no decision has been made."
Since then, apparently something strange has been going on at Penn State's Latsch Football Building, as multiple reporters have told of a bizarre scene in which Penn State's current (or is it former?) coaching staff made a mass exodus from the building, scattering out various exits in order to spread the waiting media corp too thin to catch any of them in its web.
Apparently, Ron Musselman of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette caught up with Jay Paterno: "Jay Paterno says he is still employed at PSU, but for how long?" Musselman tweeted. "They're going to make an announcement when they have it. I don't have anything for you now."
Many former Penn State players, most notably Lavar Arrington, have been outspoken today expressing their disappointment at the prospect of O'Brien as coach, instead of a bigger name/someone anybody has heard of, while pundits on the other side have wondered why O'Brien would be so crazy as to walk into such an obviously disasterous situation. Some such folks have speculated that perhaps it is Bill O'Brien's agent holding things up by insisting on a long, guaranteed contract to protect O'Brien against the almost certain failure and backlash that would accompany his time in Happy Valley.
Pretty strange stuff, folks. More details are sure to emerge soon, but for now this is one bizarre and confusing situation. Then again, I don't know why we should expect anything less from the Public Relations whizzes, or the many deluded fans at Penn State.
At what point does the death penalty just become a mercy kill?
