Texas Rep. Ron Paul is going on the air in South Carolina with a brutal attack ad against the latest anti-Romney to emerge out of the Iowa caucuses, Rick Santorum. The ad takes a page from the highly successful attack ads that ran in the Hawkeye State targeting Newt Gingrich and arguably contributing to his spectacular collapse in the polls.
The ad opens with a repeat of the ad that targeted Gingrich in Iowa, “Serial Hypocrisy,” but adds that “now another has emerged.” The ad attacks Santorum for voting to raise the debt ceiling during the Bush administration and for supporting various pieces of Congressional pork including Alaska’s infamous “bridge to nowhere.”
The ad also targets Santorum for siding against the “Right to Work Act,” attacking the motivation behind the former Pennsylvania senator’s pro-manufacturing economic policies. The ad, which declines to mention Paul’s name save for the obligatory tag at the end, calls Santorum another “serial hypocrite who can’t be trusted.”
The 60-second ad is accompanied by a $250,000 media buy, a relatively large purchase in South Carolina’s medium sized markets. The ad will go on the air on Monday.
