The Binding of Isaac is one of those games that I haven't managed to work into my gaming schedule, despite really really wanting to play it. Designer Ed McMillen's latest games takes its inspiration from the Biblical story of Isaac and Abraham. The player controls an ill-fated kid named Isaac, whose mom receives a command from above to reject, isolate, and ultimately, sacrifice her son. Isaac escapes to the monster-infested basement, where he adventures through a series of Zelda-style dungeons to escape. The gameplay and structure have received a great deal of positive attention, but the main topic of discussion seems to be the storyline. In an innovative twist, The Binding of Isaac is meant to be completed multiple times--with new endings awaiting each player upon successive game clears. That makes the announcement of a TBoI (I enjoy pronouncing it as one word--"T-boy") expansion is especially interesting.
McMillen confirmed the update via Twitter and revealed its name: "The Wrath of the Lamb." McMillen didn't reveal much about the update's content (Update: Joystiq's report on a conversation with the designer indicates it's 50% more content, featuring new challenges, items, characters, bosses and mechanics) but did note that he drew inspiration from the Catholic Book of Revelations, writing, "Whoever wrote this part of the Bible has a profoundly epic imagination." The update will run you $3 and will feature a bevy of new items, including "trinkets" that grant passive bonuses to your character. The update's set to launch in the next 2-4 months and, should The Binding of Isaac successfully stick its 3DS landing, "The Wrath of the Lamb" will also be available for the handheld port.
